Montblanc No. 149 Meisterstück Fountain Pen NOS (early 1970s) - pen

General

Montblanc Model 149 gold-coated collection of fountain pens is a design family that literally writes history. Introduced in 1924, the word Meisterstück meaning “Masterpiece,” has become a symbol for high quality luxury writing. The cap and barrel, since 1966, are crafted in black precious resin featuring the iconic white Montblanc white star inlaid in the top of the cap. These pens are fitted with an 18k gold nib (Au750), and are completed with rhodium-coated tip.

Features

The MB 149 has gone through countless iterations throughout the years. There is an independent record of these in existence, my own copy comes from White Star Committee (WSC) of Japan. The early versions were well known for their soft nibs and ebonite feeds. Some 149 versions had a metal piston assembly, other came with a plastic piston. My MB 149 weighs 31.9 g, and as the early 1970s pen, it comes with its grip section being an integral part of the main body of the whole 149 barrel. In some mid 90’s versions, the grip section was a separate piece attached to the main pen body with the help of the entire nib assembly.

Comments

MB149 is expensive to purchase new and it always was. A lot of 149’s are sold on the second-hand market for a fraction of the new pen cost. In this case, buying used pen is an option if you want to make it less painful for your finances. But you have to be very careful and wary of amazing looking fake Montblanc pens that are unfortunately very common.
