Mentmore Auto-Flow Marble Fountain Pen (1938)

Mentmore Auto-Flow Marble Fountain Pen (1938) - pen

General

During the 1920’s Mentmore Manufacturing Company Ltd produced large quantities of writing instruments, very often branded with other manufacturers’ names. In the second half of 1920’s the Platignum brand was launched. An acceptable quality, sensibly low-priced pen for the masses was born, and then produced in large number of popular colours.

Features

It was during the 1930’s when Mentmore began manufacturing high to very high quality pens, always with 14kt solid gold nibs. These make superb writers and are currently much sought after by collectors worldwide. The economy brand, Platignum continued to exist right up to the late 1960’s. Our own Mentmore Auto-Flow example was made circa in 1938, it is a button filler type and comes in an attractive gold-brown acrylic. Its construction, design and quality are ticking all the boxes and we feed her with Diamine Warm Brown ink out of respect for this lady’s age. The clip is more functional than most of its contemporaries and comes with letter M embossed right at its top. Naturally it is gold filled, so is the single ring at the bottom of the cap. This pen is not very heavy with weigh of 18.1g and its working balance in my hand, is just perfect.
